Regular gynecological visits, open communication with your provider and proactive management of symptoms can help you maintain good health and well-being.

Regular well woman care is about more than just checking a box every year. It's important for a variety of reasons—not the least of which are identifying health issues early, managing reproductive health and addressing conditions you may be experiencing. Let's take a closer look at some of these services.

What to Expect at Your Well Woman Appointment

Your annual well woman exam isn't just about routine checkups—it's an opportunity to talk openly with your provider about your health history, issues or changes you've noticed since your last visit and your overall well-being. Your visit typically includes age-appropriate screenings, such as a pap test, breast exam, pelvic exam and screenings to address any conditions or symptoms you've mentioned. These tests help detect cervical cancer, infections, or other abnormalities early, when they're most treatable. Find out more about screening recommendations by age.

This appointment is also a good opportunity to discuss birth control methods, emotional well-being, fertility concerns, hormone levels, sexual wellness, sexually transmitted infection testing and ask questions about menstruation or menopause.

Your Contraception Needs

You may be planning to wait a few years to start a family or want to prevent pregnancy altogether. Either way, if you are sexually active or planning to become sexually active, you may want to talk with your provider about birth control (also called contraception).

There are many types of birth control that suit different needs and lifestyles, and some also help treat gynecologic conditions like heavy periods. Whether you're looking for short-term options or long-term protection, your provider will help you understand your options and their possible side effects so you can select the method that's right for you.

Planning for Pregnancy and the Path to Parenthood

If you're thinking about starting a family, the providers at Northwest Physicians can guide you through how best to prepare. During your well woman visit, your provider can discuss how to optimize your health, including recommendations for prenatal vitamins and any medication or lifestyle adjustments you should consider.

Your provider will also help you learn more about other conditions that may classify your pregnancy as high risk, such as high blood pressure, diabetes or being over the age of 35. They'll also talk about timing and help you understand your fertility, so you're ready for the journey ahead.

Preparing your body for pregnancy is essential to help reduce risks and ensure a healthy pregnancy and baby. That's why we've created a short guide and timeline to help you understand what's to come on the path to becoming a parent.

Your Fertility

Without question, the pregnancy journey involves complex emotions for both parents, but here's the truth: not everyone gets pregnant right away. Nearly 18% of men and women worldwide who are excited to start or extend their families face fertility challenges.

The good news is that there are now many ways to treat the conditions that delay pregnancy, such as irregular menstrual cycles, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis and sperm issues. In fact, studies show that up to 90% of infertility cases can be improved with lifestyle modification, medication or surgery.

So, if you're under 35 and have tried to conceive for a year without success, or 35 or older and tried for six months, talk with one of the providers at Northwest Physicians. They can help you navigate your journey to becoming a parent with understanding and support.

Menopause and You

Hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain—what is going on? Hormonal changes in the months—sometimes years—leading up to menopause can affect your body in many ways, including hot flashes, irregular periods, weight gain, sleep problems, incontinence, vaginal dryness (leading to discomfort during sex) and even skin changes. The transition can also be the cause of reduced libido, mood changes—frequent irritability or depression—or cognitive issues like memory loss.

Whatever you're experiencing during "the change," which encompasses perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause, your well woman exam is a good time to talk about how you're feeling. The providers at Northwest Physicians can help treat your symptoms, balance your hormones and recommend ways to strengthen your pelvic floor.

To help, we've created a free menopause guide and symptom tracker.

Breast Cancer Screenings

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, but early detection and treatment increases survival rates—according to the American Cancer Society, the 5-year survival rate of localized breast cancer—cancer that has not spread outside the breast—is 99%. The importance of detecting breast cancer as early as possible cannot be understated.

The American College of Radiology recommends that average-risk women schedule annual mammography screenings at age 40. However, your doctor may recommend a different schedule starting as early as age 25 if you have dense breasts, a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors.

Northwest Physicians uses breast imaging technology that may detect breast cancer at the earliest stages, when treatment can be most effective.

Choosing a Provider That's Right For You

Choosing a gynecology provider is an incredibly important decision. Regular checkups, personalized care and open communication with your healthcare provider help ensure that you can focus on living a healthy, happy life.

Of course, you want to find someone who makes you feel comfortable, listens and can provide the individualized care you need—but how do you find the right provider for you? Beyond finding someone with experience and board certifications in obstetrics and gynecology, you may want to consider:

Your Provider Preferences. Consider what's most important to you. Are you interested in someone who specializes in a certain area, like high-risk pregnancies or menopause?

Your Insurance Network. Finding a provider who is in-network for your health insurance is one of the first factors many people consider.

Availability and Location. No one looks forward to a long drive to appointments, so, map out how far away the office is. In addition, find out if the provider has good appointment availability and what hospital privileges they have for childbirth (if that's something you're considering).

Others' Recommendations. If you're unsure where to start, ask friends, family or your primary care physician for recommendations and referrals. They can provide valuable insights into a doctor's approach and bedside manner. Don't forget to also read online reviews from previous patients.

Philosophy of Care. You should feel comfortable asking questions about your provider's approach to healthcare. Asking questions is a good way to see if the provider can meet your needs and whether their communication style works for you.

Establishing care with a provider and scheduling annual well woman exams is one of the best steps you can take to take control of your well-being. And, the providers at Northwest Physicians are ready to care for you.
